Belinda Coyne

narrative echoing

METAL | BRIGHTON

How does your technique bring out the hidden stories or emotions of the material you use?

Physically applying layers of enamel over many firings and the subsequent abrading back of areas of the enamel allows me to reveal parts of the previous layers, creating a narrative echoing the worn paths and ancient landscapes that have inspired the work.

After each firing, I use a wet stone polisher to abrade the enamel surface, a method I see as reductive drawing. This reveals not only surface marks but also those embedded within the piece, unearthing the hidden narratives of the landscape. The interplay of opaque and transparent sieved enamels builds additional depth and complexity. This back-and-forth of addition and subtraction is crucial to my work.

Each piece becomes a dialogue between the landscape and the viewer, inviting them to explore the underlying stories and emotions rooted in the geography itself.
