CERAMICS | DERBY
How does your artwork reflect the transformation of materials and/or the idea of identity?
The variety of hand building techniques I have developed for my sculptural pieces in clay are slow, repetitive and personally meditative. I feel that this style of making helps me connect to this very adaptable and instinctive material, allowing me to create from what starts out as soft malleable material pieces—they appear to be structured and solid, yet are fluid and full of movement.
Through these layered sculptural pieces I am exploring my personal memories and reflecting on my identity as a person with dual English and East Asian heritage. Images, shapes and forms from my conscious and subconscious have been translated into solid form. Yet there is also movement and change, representing life and personal growth.
