Kira Phoenix K’inan

fun, wonder & imagination

GLASS | LONDON

How does your craft help you explore memories, and is there a specific moment that inspired this piece?

The PLAY series began to form after I reflected on what kind of statement I wanted to put into the world. Just as children’s building blocks encourage the sensation of fun, wonder and imagination, I wanted the PLAY series to inspire joy and to remind all viewers of their ability to look at the world with childlike wonder.

I chose four geometric shapes; circle, square, hexagon and triangle, as these are the building blocks used to understand and create our world. I selected bright bold colours as they catch the eye immediately – you can’t help wanting to interact with the pieces to create a new composition of shapes and colours. And there is also a tension between the fascination of playing with these pieces and realising they are glass, so can break if handled incorrectly. The glass material reminds us how fragile everything actually is and how we must handle all interactions with care.
