Rosa Wiland Holmes

beautiful, elegant shapes

CERAMICS | BUCKINGHAMSHIRE

How does your technique bring out the hidden stories or emotions of the material you use?

During my process of working with clay, I feel a deep connection to this organic material. I allow the clay the freedom to twist and turn until it finds its final resting place. I create my natural, organic forms through various techniques that reveal the endless possibilities within the material. When I am throwing on the pottery wheel, my body and the motion of the clay become one. It never ceases to amaze me how the clay transforms into beautiful, elegant shapes guided only by the simple tool of my hands.

The clay undergoes many stages of change before it reaches its final state—much like we do in life. You must gently guide it through each step, supporting it and gradually introducing it to the heat of the kiln. As the temperature reaches its peak, the clay transforms into ceramic, hardening into a resilient form—strong enough to endure the outside world.
