Denise Coupland

shaped through shared perception

TEXTILES | NOTTINGHAMSHIRE

What do you hope viewers will discover beneath the surface of your work?

My hope is that viewers take time to look closely, to pause and explore with curiosity, discovering not only the intricate details of the hand stitch but also moments of pareidolia for themselves: faces and forms that seem to emerge from the surface. From dragons to kangaroos, Cornwall to castles all morphing together into an imagined landscape that reveals how memory and identity can be shaped through shared perception. And who knows, the viewer may even discover new images hidden beneath the surface, ones that have lain undiscovered until now.

Do You See What I See? – 2024, Silk fibres dyed with natural dyes (indigo, woad, coreopsis), hand stitch details • £4,900
