Daphne Krinos

balanced and united

Contemporary jeweller Daphne Krinos’ work is always described as distinctive by people who collect it. She has strived to develop and to always move forward in the forty years of her practice as a studio jeweller. She likes to challenge herself, sometimes by collaborating with other makers, or by using new techniques and materials. She has recently been making larger pieces which can be worn as necklaces or brooches, new challenging pieces that can be worn or viewed as wall sculptures.

Daphne usually starts an idea by working directly in metal, or by combining rough models made of paper and metal. Her designs develop by taking photos of these, and sometimes making collages. The pieces shown at COLLECT 2024 are part of an ongoing series that started a few years ago from a collaboration with another maker. The ideas behind them come mainly from looking at roads and buildings around where she lives. Daphne was keen to design pieces that were balanced, and united natural and man-made forms.

Daphne says. “I have always liked making brooches which are usually the beginnings of new ideas for me. The four brooches I am showing at Collect can also be adapted to be worn as necklaces. With some of this work I am trying to get away from my ‘comfort zone’ and work on a slightly larger scale. I’m also leaving the surfaces silver white, as opposed to oxidising it which has been a bit of a trademark for me throughout my making career.”
