About:

Sasha Wardell has over 30 years’ experience in the world of bone china and porcelain, having studied in two centres of excellence, namely Stoke-on-Trent and Limoges, France. She has adapted elements of industry to a studio environment with her own production which includes vessels, lighting and teaware, all created in slipcast bone china.

Sasha concentrates on perfecting the craft-based skills which enhance the inherent qualities of bone china and her carefully produced distinctive work embraces and reflects contemporary taste and lifestyle. Her fascination with bone china is due to its extreme whiteness – it serves as a perfect partner for colour response, and its absolute translucency and luminosity adds another dimension to the work.

Although Sasha looks to the natural world for imagery, her pieces are very much process-led with the innate qualities of bone china doing the rest. Each piece is individually made using industrial processes and techniques which aim to highlight the translucent aspect of this material. Sasha is known for her multi-layered vessels, technically demanding, delicate, and utterly contemporary in presentation.

“Bone china is a famously challenging material. Whilst its translucency seduces, its high shrinkage and warping issues present an interesting conundrum for the maker.”

Sasha is also a published author, of ‘Slipcasting’ ( A&C Black) and ‘Porcelain and Bone China’ (Crowood Press), and continues to exhibit and sell worldwide.
