Design-Nation: future thinking for craft and design

A special event for London Craft Week 2019: Oxo Tower Wharf presents THE FUTURE OF CRAFT in collaboration with Design-Nation and Future Icons.

We are delighted to be involved with this innovative new hub for London Craft Week, taking over the characterful Bargehouse on the South Bank. The exhibition includes a curated line up of innovative and forward-thinking craft organisations, practitioners and collectives. Set against the raw, industrial surrounding of the Bargehouse, visitors will discover a series of new works and installations by trail-blazing makers working in textiles, furniture, ceramics, lighting, metal and interior accessories.

Design-Nation presents 21 of our exceptional designer-makers across eight rooms in the Bargehouse. On the first floor innovative textile designers Angie Parker and Anna Gravelle are sharing a room to show their designs for interiors, while renowned designer and weaver Margo Selby has taken over another to show her handwoven artworks, next to Lucy Elisabeth, showing her clever wireworks. On the 2nd floor is fantastic rug designer Helen Yardley, and also Fung & Bedford who have created two installations from their trademark pleated and cut Tyvek, one in a dedicated room and the other downstairs, as part of the ground floor entrance area. On the third floor 15 other Design-Nation members are showing a wide range of work over two large spaces: Amy Leigh, Christine Meyer-Eaglestone, Emma-Jane Rule, Georgia Bosson, Jacqueline James, Jacky Puzey, Julie Vernon, Leszek Sikon, Linda Bloomfield, Maria Sigma, Michelle House, Raw Studio, Sarah Villeneau, Speckled Grey and Susannah Weiland.

Knife-maker Leszek Sikon will be demonstrating his blacksmithing skills on the piazza throughout, while Maria Sigma is weaving on her loom, brought upstairs to room 12 especially for LCW. On Thursday 9 May Angie Parker will show how to create vibrant cloth through body-tensioned weaving, and on Saturday 11 Susannah Weiland will be demonstrating her beautiful embroidery.

Alongside the exhibitions, installations and demos by Design-Nation’s network is a full programme of talks and workshops. More details of these can be found on the Oxo Tower Wharf website.
