“I am inspired by lichens and on my daily walks during lockdown I have noticed lichens growing on trees by the side of the road. Lichens are indicators of clean air and in polluted city centres only the white, crusty type of lichen can survive, while in areas with clean air, a far greater diversity of lichens can exist. I have made a series of nesting bowls which, when nested is reminiscent of the growth rings of a tree or the zones in a city. As the bowls get smaller, there are fewer and fewer types of lichen, represented by lichen effect glazes, until the inner bowl which has no lichens at all. I would like to bring awareness to reducing pollution and increasing biodiversity.”
