Darren Ball originally trained in fashion textiles, specialising in hand-knit. A qualified art teacher, he now focuses on his embroidery. His unique work, made using a domestic sewing machine, is inspired by personal narratives, experiences and his vintage magazine collection. He is an alumni of the Crafts Council Hothouse programme.
Made in 2020, these unique embroideries were an optimistic response to the beginning of a new decade. They are interpretations of images in ‘Stitchcraft’ magazines from 1950. These joyously positive pieces use hand knitted Shetland wool and a found palette of fabrics, machine embroidered onto vintage scarves and handkerchiefs.
